Insurance for Painters & Decorators

Comprehensive insurance solutions for painters and decorators. From residential redecorations to commercial contracts, we arrange cover that protects your business against the unique risks of the decorating trade.

Important: Focus Insurance Services is an insurance broker, not an insurer. We arrange cover on your behalf from a panel of insurers. Policy terms, conditions, and exclusions apply.

Understanding Your Risks

Every trade has unique exposures. Here are the key risks we help painters & decorators protect against.

1

Paint & Chemical Damage

Spills, splashes, and overspray can damage customer property, furniture, carpets, and vehicles. Public liability is essential.

2

Falls from Height

Working from ladders and scaffolding creates fall risks. Employers' liability covers injuries to your staff.

3

Damage to Customer Property

Accidental damage to fixtures, fittings, and furnishings during preparation or painting work.

4

Colour & Finish Disputes

Disagreements over colour matching or finish quality can lead to rework costs and potential claims.

5

Health Hazards

Exposure to solvents, dust from sanding, and lead paint in older properties creates health risks.

6

Fire Risk

Flammable materials, solvents, and hot air guns create fire risks, particularly in enclosed spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my insurance cover paint spills on customer property?
Yes, public liability insurance covers accidental damage to third-party property, including paint spills on carpets, furniture, or vehicles. This is one of the most common claims for decorators.
Am I covered for exterior work at height?
Work at height is typically covered but must be declared. If you regularly work from scaffolding, cherry pickers, or at significant heights, this affects your premium and cover terms.
Do I need special cover for spray painting?
Spray painting should be declared as it increases overspray risks. Insurers will want to know about your masking procedures and whether you spray indoors or outdoors.
What about working in occupied properties?
Working in occupied homes or businesses is standard for decorators and is covered. However, you should take extra care with dust sheets and protection to minimise claims.
Does my policy cover lead paint removal?
Basic lead paint work may be covered, but extensive lead removal or work in commercial settings may require specialist cover. Asbestos work is typically excluded.
